Notes on the go:
Used Akeeba Backup to do a full site backup under php 8.3 (whence it warned me that this version was released after it had been written therefore no absolute guarantees - fair call), and also again under php 8.1.
The Joomla 4.4.0 upgrade availability wasn't showing in the admin panel when I went back there, so I changed php back to 8.3 and that fixed it. Ergo: for whatever reason, (on my server at least) Joomla was only seeing the upgrade availability when php was set to version 8.3.
And now for the exciting part now that I have my backups made ... (but first updating extensions so they are compatible with J4.4.0)
